Building on my longstanding interest in the technology and architecture of conflict, the film explores perspectives on visibility, technology and the reconstruction of narratives about that period. The film blends animation, historical photography and staged scenes to underscore the paradoxical relationship between warfare and technological progress, emphasizing the evolving surveillance and propaganda programs of World War I.

This study addresses the impact of a transformative political event—the reversion of sovereign authority—on the policy-making roles of public organizations and public administrators in Hong Kong. With the transfer of sovereignty, the environment of public administration in Hong Kong became increasingly politicized. Civil servants now encounter pressures and conflicting demands from Beijing, from pro-democracy forces, from the Chief Executive, from members of the Legislative Council, and from the business community.
Although the public bureaucracy retains its policy-making preeminence, its authority no longer is unquestioned and unchecked. The Central Government exerts hidden influence. Members of the Legislative Council are striving to become respected players in the policy-formulation process.

Nearly 50 years ago ancient dingo bones were unearthed in Madura Cave on the Nullarbor Plain. Provides support for the theory that dingoes came to Australia by boat with humans. Now a trio of archaeologists — Jane Balme, Sue O’Connor and Stewart Fallon — have analysed the bones using a special carbon dating technique to provide the oldest direct date for the dingo’s arrival in Australia so far.
There have been additions since that date but the major part of the Cobb dates from then. It was connected to the mainland in and the North Wall was built in However, in Jane Austen’s Persuasion, Louisa Musgrove jumps off the steps.
While many area studies courses have taken the nation-state as the initial unit of analysis and inquiry, this course shifts to look at margins and borders in order to understand the broader sub and supra state historic, economic, cultural, and political processes throughout the region of Mainland Southeast Asia. In so doing, this course is divided into two major parts: first, we will examine transnational historic processes which are themselves transgressive of state boundaries, and second, we will look at the ways in which borders themselves are mobilized as part of the state’s assertion of sovereignty over geography, however incomplete this might be.
In addition to assigned readings and two short essays, students will complete an independent research paper on a topic of their own choosing. Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:. Develop a critical analysis on how to approach historical and cultural processes in Mainland Southeast Asia outside the framework of the nation-state. Combine conventional understandings of commodity relationships to describe the international narcotics trade and the role of the borderlands.
‘Jihad Jane’ review: lies, deceit and murder in a tale of terrorist seduction
She has been weaving most of her adult life, and teaching for many of those years. Since becoming a Louet dealer in , she has worked closely with the company and gave invaluable advice for developing what many call the best table loom on the market. Since opening, hundreds of weavers have come to the studio to deepen their skills on the loom.
The studio is located on an island in the Salish sea, located between Vancouver Island and the British Columbian mainland. It features spectacular coastal and pastoral scenery and a moderate climate. The local area is known for the hiking, the food producers, the shoreline, the artisans, the quaint country roads, the artists.
Their shouts and laughter as they tried to teach the dog to fetch made Jane’s heart He reminded her they had a date that night, an adultsonly Saturday-night of two daughters, had recently gotten engaged to Max Lewis from the mainland.
Rather, I mean that it is blindingly lit, no doubt in deference to the theatrical wisdom that defines comedy as what dies in the dark. Not witty comedy with its verbal arabesques, nor intellectual comedy with its Paris Review name-checks, nor meta-comedy with its scrambled plotlines — but the vanilla kind that once dominated commercial theater. She has certainly furnished the play with all the original equipment. So does the occasional sound of gunshots seeping through the thin walls of the cookie-cutter house in the retirement community that gives the play its sarcastic title.
Ben Ben McKenzie is the stereotypical firstborn, overburdened and bossy; Brian Michael Urie the stereotypical baby, overindulged and whiny. Both insist that people so nearly dead as their parents have no business splitting up. But not everything beautifully done makes sense beyond its immediate context, and often the context seems woefully contrived.
Though Bill is a classic sourpuss, Wohl has him enroll in a stand-up comedy class at the recreation center — largely, it seems, to let him tell a great old joke about St. Peter welcoming four nuns to heaven.

Mainland Dating owner Jane Metcalfe 41 , of Dunedin, said since the speed-dating business started in Dunedin in , it had put more than couples in committed relationships and resulted in more than weddings and the birth of more than babies. The business had expanded to include Invercargill, Timaru and Christchurch but demand had ”dropped off” and speed-dating nights stopped in Timaru in , Invercargill in and in Dunedin last month.
She continued the events in Christchurch but said they would not be held in Dunedin again until more people signalled they wanted the service. She believed the decline in demand was due to people using dating technology on smartphones, but said she would not change her business model to include a smartphone app. I want actual people to meet other actual people because that’s how the world works and I hope the world continues to work that way, but smartphones are changing the way people communicate.
At the event, they talked for four minutes and answered a list of questions provided, such as hobbies and job. The couple allowed Ms Metcalfe to share their email addresses and then the ball was in their court. You know what you are in for. Donna 38 , who did not want her surname published due to fears of being called ”desperate and dateless Donna of Dunedin”, attended a speed-dating night in Dunedin last winter and failed to find a match. She has decided to travel to Christchurch to ”hunt a hubby” after census statistics revealed a man glut in that city.

No satisfactory explanation of the name exists but a man-made construction has served as a refuge here since at least The earliest known drawing, made in , shows a basic shape similar to the present construction, and this was built after the westerly gales breached the breakwater in There have been additions since that date but the major part of the Cobb dates from then.
It was connected to the mainland in and the North Wall was built in To get to the Cobb, you can either walk west to it from the square along the Marine Parade and Cart Road or from one of the two main car parks: Holmbush on the left as you leave town towards Exeter and the Devon coast, or Monmouth Beach which is west of the Cobb and accessed down the steep hill next to Holmbush.
There is only one way onto the main part of the Cobb, entering past the RNLI lifeboat station on the right and the slipway to your left. The lifeboat station and shop is well worth a visit to appreciate the importance of the charity’s lifesaving work. The slipway is used by all those launching boats into the water and removing them.
In winter all the non-commercial boats are taken from their moorings for safe storage on land. As you pass the station you will see there is a road round the harbour and also steps up to the outward wall. Walking the wall is the best way to see the Cobb, providing the weather and sea conditions allow. One of the buildings on the Cobb has been converted to house a marine aquarium.

Following a row with her boyfriend Kurt on holiday in Amsterdam, Colleen LaRose hooked up with a Muslim man staying in the same hotel. Her interest in Islam was piqued by this brief encounter, and once home in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, LaRose signed up to a Muslim dating site. Over a tight 94 minutes, we hear from key players in the conspiracy, with LaRose herself first heard by phone from Tallahassee prison in Florida — and later seen upon her release in November It is no surprise that every subsequent romantic relationship LaRose enters into seems destined for disaster.
There is also a heartbreaking scene in which LaRose phones her son Christian, only for him to be uninterested with her attempts to rekindle a maternal connection. It remains a mystery who Eagle Eye, a conspirator seemingly named after a Shia LaBeouf action film about terrorism, actually was. That aside, it would be interesting to know exactly what LaRose did in mainland Europe after she left Paulin Ramirez in Ireland and immediately before she returned to the US and her arrest.
Interviews with protagonists are fair and sensitive, while archive news reports of the case are used sparingly. We can also begin to understand why hideous life experiences might push people to pursue actions most of us consider unthinkable. Credit: WildCard Distribution. FILM Reviews. One Government, Multiple Systems: Hong Kong Public Administration in Transition
The following Shortlist by independent art historian Jane DeBevoise focuses on women artists practising after the end of the Cultural Revolution. These thirty-plus years have witnessed dramatic socioeconomic and demographic shifts—as the country lurched from a mostly poor, centrally planned agricultural society determined by rigidly interpreted communist precepts, to a mostly prosperous, still-centrally planned urban society determined by fierce competition and capitalist logic.
Yet despite these dramatic shifts that propelled China into a global superpower, its political system has remained more or less constant, with power concentrated in a Communist Party that discourages public dissent or individual activism. For this reason, self-organised feminist activities are often regarded with suspicion and sometimes censured.
Divided into two sections, this Shortlist begins with a selection of reference books that offer historical and critical contextualisation of the development of art made by women, including a broad range of practices, from painting and sculpture to installation, video, and performance.

The average woman would date dozens of men and spend thousands of dollars before finding Mr Right, according to a Kiwi dating expert. The year-old says a woman on the prowl for a lengthy period could date “at least” that many suitors. Sasha Madarasz, dating agent and owner of Auckland matchmaking agency Two’s Company, says most Kiwi women might have between one and five “matches” before finding a relationship, and may go on two or three dates with each person.
She said it was hard to pin down how much money her clients might spend, but suggested women would spend “thousands” making themselves look good. Many women took a pride in their appearance but would only commit to major expense if they got further dates with the same man. A hard slog finds that Mr Right After splitting from her husband three years ago, Grisel Hunkin hit the dating scene hard. Whether it was speed dating, internet dating, or being set up through friends of friends, the Chilean-born mother-of-two tried it all.
Grisel said she had dated a lot more than 24 men but the bad dates – and the cost – paid off when she met Mr Right at a speed dating event a month ago. I’m good-looking, educated and have a sense of humour, but I still did not find anyone,” she said. New Zealand Herald.
